How to Work Through Self-Doubt on the Spiritual Path

“The journey towards enlightenment is not about arrival, but about the path we take to get there.”

– Jiddu Krishnamurti

In my opinion, being on a spiritual path means choosing to live with greater awareness, intention, and connection. It’s not necessarily about following a specific religion or achieving some ideal version of enlightenment. Instead, it’s a personal journey of growth, healing, and self-discovery.

For many of us, the spiritual path involves learning to trust our inner wisdom, developing a deeper relationship with ourselves, others and the world around us. It’s about seeking meaning beyond the surface and recognising that life holds more than just the material or the logical.

Walking a spiritual path can look different for everyone. It might include meditation, energy healing, prayer, journaling, connecting with nature, or simply making conscious choices that align with your values and inner truth.

At its heart, the spiritual path is about coming home to yourself, over and over again. It’s not always comfortable or clear, but it invites us to live with presence, authenticity, and purpose.

That brings me to something important: self-doubt. It’s a natural part of walking a spiritual path, and almost everyone will come up against it at some stage on their journey. Whether this path is new to you or it’s something you’ve been committed to for a while, moments of uncertainty can arise about your intuition, your healing abilities, your beliefs, or even your worthiness to walk a spiritual path. For me, personally, it is a battle I deal with constantly! It can be unsettling, especially when your intention is to serve others or live more consciously. But here’s the truth: self-doubt isn’t a sign that you’re off-track. It’s often a quiet invitation to go deeper, to get honest with yourself, and to grow in resilience, faith and trust.

In this post, I’ll share 6 ways to work through self-doubt as you embark on your spiritual path, so that rather than seeing it as something to avoid, you can begin to understand it, work with it, and gently move through it.

1. Recognise Self-Doubt as a Messenger, Not a Roadblock

Self-doubt can often come with harsh internal narratives: “You’re not spiritual enough.” “Who are you to do this work?” “What if you’re making it all up?” These thoughts can be loud and convincing. But they are not truth. They’re signals. Often, they arise when you’re stretching beyond your comfort zone, stepping into something unfamiliar, or about to grow.

Rather than trying to push self-doubt away, pause and get curious. What is this doubt really about? Is it fear of being seen? Fear of failure? A past wound resurfacing? When you name the deeper layer, you take back your power from it. With that in mind, it might be a good time to begin exploring the healing of your shadow self. You can read more about this in my blog post Healing the Hidden Self: How Reiki Supports Shadow Work – Sublime Awakening.

2. Come Back to Your “Why”

When the inner critic is loud, it helps to reconnect with the deeper reason you’re on this path. Why do you do this work? What called you to begin your journey? Who or what have you helped along the way? You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to feel confident all the time. But coming back to your “why” reconnects you with purpose. And purpose is more powerful than perfection. Write your “why” down. Keep it somewhere visible. Let it become your anchor when doubt begins to rise.

3. Ground Yourself in Practice, Not Performance

Self-doubt often flares up when we start comparing ourselves to others or feeling pressure to “prove” our spirituality. But spiritual growth is not about performance. It’s about presence. It’s about showing up with honesty, wherever you are.

Whether you’re meditating, giving Reiki, offering guidance, or simply trying to live with more compassion, come back to the intention behind the practice. Let go of needing to get it right. Let it be real, even if it’s messy. That’s where growth happens. And I get it; it can be really challenging. I’ve been there too. I’m someone who’s often caught in the trap of comparing myself to others and questioning my worth. That’s exactly why it’s so important to reconnect with your ‘why’; it brings you back to your core values and what truly matters to you.

4. Stay Connected. You’re Not Meant to Do This Alone

Isolation can amplify self-doubt. When we’re alone in our heads, our thoughts can spiral. But when we speak our doubts aloud in safe, supportive spaces, we often find we’re not alone in how we feel.

Talk to a trusted mentor, teacher, or soul friend. Join a community or circle where vulnerability is welcome. When you realise others have had similar doubts and moved through them, your thoughts and actions begin to shift. One way I’ve worked through self-doubt in my psychic and mediumship work is by regularly joining development circles at my local spiritual church. I also hold Reiki circles with past students. This is a gentle, supportive space where we can build confidence together and openly share what’s on our hearts when it comes to our personal practice.

Healing doesn’t require perfection. It requires connection.

5. Remember That Growth Feels Uncomfortable

On the spiritual path, growth doesn’t always feel blissful. Sometimes, it feels like doubt, resistance, confusion, frustration or even scary! But these are all signs that something within is being stretched, transformed, or released. You’re not going backwards. You’re becoming more aware.

Hold compassion for the parts of you that are scared. Speak to yourself as you would to someone you love. And remind yourself: “I don’t have to feel confident to keep going. I just have to stay open.”

6. Let Your Spirituality Be Human

Lastly, you don’t have to be endlessly peaceful, wise, or certain to be spiritual. You get to be real. You get to question. You get to have off days. And still, you’re enough.

The spiritual path is not about bypassing your humanness. It’s about meeting it with grace. In fact, some of the most profound healing comes when we stop pretending to have it all together and simply show up, as we are, with humility and heart. Remember: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” (Teilhard de Chardin)

On an end note, self-doubt isn’t a flaw. It’s part of the terrain when you set about on a spiritual path. But you don’t have to let it derail you. With gentleness, truth, and grounded support, you can learn to walk with it, listen to it, and eventually, rise beyond it.

You’re not alone. You’re not behind. You’re exactly where you need to be. So, keep going.

Many blessings,
